Verdict

The 2022 model year (MY) BYD ATTO 3 was tested by Euro NCAP in 2024 and rated as ‘Not recommended’. 2025 MY vehicles are equipped with a Bosch Assisted driving system, and the software for 2022 MY vehicles, equipped with a Veoneer system has been improved. Both vehicles have been re-assessed. This rating applies only to 2022 MY cars which have been updated to version 13.1.32.2505120.1

BYD’s appropriately named ‘Intelligent Cruise Control System’ accurately portrays system functionality. The promotional material and the handbook correctly indicate the limitations of the system capabilities. System status information is displayed but there is no head-up display. Driver monitoring has been improved, and the system now deactivates if the driver does not resume control within 30seconds of a warning being issued. However, detection of the driver’s hands on the wheel still lacks robustness. Overall, the system balances driver steering input with lane guidance, promoting co-operative driving.

The 2022 MY ATTO 3 uses camera inputs to detect speed limit signs. However, the speed limiter reacted to some temporary and/ or conditional speed limits as though they were primary limits, and did not meet Euro NCAP’s requirements. There is no speed adaptation for upcoming road features such as curves and junctions. The 2022 MY ATTO 3 responds to avoid a collision in some of the ACC test scenarios. The driver is supported through the S-Bend, and the car is now kept fully in lane at all but the highest test speed. A lane-change assist function is not provided. It is in the area of Safety Backup that the greatest improvements have been made. In case of an unresponsive driver, the ATTO 3 now automatically brings the car to a safe and controlled stop. If the radar or camera is blocked the car provides a warning and, unlike previously, disengages the Assisted Driving system.

The 2022 MY BYD ATTO 3 is significantly improved by software version 13.1.32.2505120.1, and owners should be sure to allow the upgrade. As well as modest levels of driver engagement and vehicle assistance, the system now offers a good level of safety backup. Overall, the 2022 MY BYD ATTO 3 offers moderate levels of highway and interurban assistance.
