The Corolla Verso proved itself to be extremely stable, providing good protection for occupants. It missed out by just one point on a maximum safety score for frontal impact.
The frontal airbag system is dual-stage, detecting the driver’s size using a seat position sensor. The knee airbag deploys for crashes above 25kph and gives good protection. Intelligent seat belt reminders are fitted for those in the front.
The restraint for the older child used ISOFIX anchorages and a top tether but protection for his chest was weak.
Pedestrian protection was limited and no special efforts were made to protect knees and upper legs.
The restraint systems, which include dual-stage tethered airbags for the driver and front passenger and belts fitted with pre-tensioners and load limiters, worked well although impact forces acting on the driver’s chest were a little high.
There has been much design effort to improve protection for the driver’s knees and upper legs and the knee airbag worked well.
There was minor distortion of the door aperture but the footwell suffered only minimal intrusion. All safety belts were three-point.
A very impressive side impact protection system included seat mounted thorax airbags and a head curtain airbag, which also protected those seated in the rear.
The 3-year-old used a forward facing Toyota-branded Britax Romer Duo Plus. This was fitted using the ISOFIX anchorages and top tether. The restraint used by the 18 month old was a rear facing Toyota branded Britax Romer Baby-Safe. This was fitted using the car’s adult belt. The children’s heads were well protected in the side impact but in the frontal impact the chest load on the older child was high.
Permanent labels fitted to both sides of the passenger’s sun visor warned against placing a child in a rear facing seat opposite an airbag.
Protection was limited, with none from the bumper or bonnet’s leading edge. But the centre of the bonnet showed some softness to cushion adult and child heads.
