Comments
The 307 has a strong passenger safety cell that remained intact during the front and side impacts and protected its occupants. The floorpan also retained its shape. However, the driver ran a risk of serious knee injuries from hitting the steering column and lock. Child protection was effective but the 18-month-old risked neck injuries. The CC’s safeguarding of pedestrians was average.

Front impact
The car was tested with its roof down to give worst-case results. But the body proved very strong after the impact, showing no distortion around the sill and pillar areas and this helped to keep impact forces acting on occupants’ chests low. The footwell was virtually undisturbed, which helped to protect the driver’s feet. He risked knee injuries from hitting the steering column and lock although the surrounding area was hazard-free. The front seat belts had reel mounted pre-tensioners and were load limited, both of which reduce the risk of injury for occupants.

Side impact
The 307cc was tested with its roof erect to check whether the driver’s head would strike it. The head and thorax airbag mounted in the seat prevented this and protected well, although the driver’s chest contacted the seat wing and airbag, giving a slightly higher loading than for the rest of his body.

Child-protection
Both were forward facing and used two-point ISOFIX mountings without top tethers. Both children’s head’s were protected in the frontal and side impacts although the younger one risked neck injury. The standard passenger airbag is fitted with a manual on/off switch. A pictogram and written labels on the end of the fascia and on the stowed side of the passenger’s sun visor indicated the presence of this switch. But neither warned of the risk of serious injury or death if child is placed in a rear-facing restraint opposite the airbag while it is active.

Pedestrian protection
The 307 CC provided limited protection where an adult or child pedestrian might strike their heads in a collision. But tests on its bumper and the leading edge of its bonnet showed that they offered little in the way of protection.
