Front impact
The driver dummy's head bottomed out the airbag and the chest made contact with the rim of the steering-wheel. Structures in the dashboard represented a potential hazard to the driver and passenger's knee and femur protection. Part of the power steering mechanism moved rearward, opening a spot-welded seam and rupturing the driver's footwell. Mitsubishi inform us that 5-door cars from chassis number *XMCXNZ34A5F075819* incorporate improvements to the footwell area, although Euro NCAP has not assessed the modified cars.
Child-protection
In the frontal impact, the 3 year old dummy's head moved forward further than Euro NCAP recommends. The passenger's airbag can be deactivated to allow a rearward-facing child restraint to be placed in that seating position. However, the switch for doing this did not meet Euro NCAP's requirements. The presence of the ISOFIX anchorages in the rear outboard seats was not sufficiently clearly marked.
Pedestrian protection
Both the bumper and the leading edge of the bonnet scored no points for the protection they offered to pedestrians.
