Comments
The latest Fiat Stilo achieved a four star adult protection rating after Euro NCAP allowed frontal and side impact retests. These followed improvements to the body frame structure, pedal box, fascia beam, energy absorbing element behind the fascia and rear door handles. Protection for child occupants was good but, on the 1.6-engined model used here, protection for pedestrians was poor, gaining only one star.

Front impact
The dual stage airbags, belt pretensioners and load limiters worked well with the strong, stable body. But the driver dummy recorded high loads at its chest. Hard structures behind the steering column and fascia added to the risk of knee injuries for the driver and passenger. The footwell suffered little deformation and control of the pedals was good although the brake was found to be in the blocked position after the test; there was also very little intrusion.

Side impact
Impressive protection includes seat-mounted thorax airbags and a head curtain airbag which also protects those in the rear. However, the top of the side airbag was found to be still partly inside the seat’s side wing. Loads recorded at the driver’s chest were on the high side and forces transferred unrealistically from his back to the seat, slightly reducing the loads measured.

Child-protection
Both children were carried forward facing in Britax Romer Duo Plus restraints fitted using the car’s ISOFIX anchorages and top tethers. A permanent pictogram and a seven language text label fitted to both sides of the passenger’s sun visor warns against placing a child in a rear facing restraint opposite an active airbag. The 18 month old was protected in both impacts as was the 3 year old in the side impact. But the chest load on the older child in the frontal impact was a little high.

Pedestrian protection
A Stilo with a 1.6 engine was assessed. Tests on a 1.4 version are being considered and, if different, will be published by Euro NCAP. The bonnet top where a child’s head might strike and, to a small degree its leading edge, gave cushioning. No parts of the bumper offered any protection, however.
