Will the design features that are necessary to ensure good frontal impact performance inevitably be detrimental for pedestrians?
No. The strength of the structure to give good frontal impact does not need to be on the outside of the car body. An effective design for bonnet structure with the position of hard structures kept underneath gives good pedestrian performance. The two are not incompatible or mutually exclusive.

Why are there different coloured stars for Pedestrian Protection ratings?
Euro NCAP continuously improves its assessment procedures as enhanced testing methods become available. From the 1st of January 2002, Euro NCAP adopted advanced procedures for Pedestrian assessments. Please note that because of the changes to the pedestrian testing and rating procedure, a grey star result cannot be compared with a green star result.
