Improved Nissan Navara gains three star rating

Euro NCAP today releases results for its assessment of the modified Nissan Navara. The upgraded car has achieved three stars for adult occupant protection. After Euro NCAP’s earlier tests highlighted serious safety concerns, Nissan promptly modified all new production vehicles and initiated a Service Campaign to upgrade the airbag software of all Navaras produced since 2005.

Euro NCAP recently released a struck-through one star rating for the 08 model year Navara. The poor rating was due in part to the delayed firing of the airbag in the frontal impact test. Nissan reacted swiftly and developed new airbag software to ensure better occupant protection. Production Navaras are now equipped with the improved software and an extensive Service Campaign is underway to upgrade owners’ vehicles .

Nissan also asked Euro NCAP to assess the modified vehicle to ensure that its performance had improved. Euro NCAP’s new assessment reveals that Nissan have effectively addressed the airbag malfunction, removing the high risk of life-threatening injuries seen in the earlier test. Dr Michiel van Ratingen, Secretary General of Euro NCAP says ‘Nissan have acted responsibly and promptly in response to our findings. Euro NCAP hopes that by releasing this new result, it will speed up the Service Campaign and ensure that all Navaras are upgraded to the higher safety specification.’

In these new tests, the Child Occupant Protection rating has also been improved to four stars due to the additional consumer information Nissan has made available.

Isuzu are currently investigating the safety issues revealed in Euro NCAP’s tests of their vehicle the D-Max/Rodeo.

The result released today is for a vehicle in the Pickup category. The ratings for this re-assessment can be seen in more detail at www.euroncap.com.

Euro NCAP’s test results are released on a quarterly basis. Keep checking our website for details of forthcoming results.

Editors’ notes

  • With the introduction some time ago of the Child Occupant Protection rating it is important to refer to the Adult Occupant Protection rating correctly. In the past, this has been referred to as the “Overall” or “Occupant” rating. Neither of these is now satisfactory.
  • The front impact test is conducted at 64km/h (40mph) into an offset deformable barrier, the side impact test 50km/h (30mph), the pole test at 29km/h (18mph) and the pedestrian tests at 40km/h (25mph).
  • Comparison between Size Categories: It is essential that no attempt is made to compare the ratings between cars in different segments or mass groups. The frontal crash test aims to measure the performance of the car impacting another car of similar mass. There is no capability to determine what would happen if cars of widely different masses impact each other. It is not primarily the mass difference that has the effect, but the effect that mass has on the structural stiffness combined with the relative height of the structures from the ground.
